€31 Million in Cuts to Education in the Budget

So this week saw the dreaded budget revealed!! In keeping with the theme of my blog (education) I am going to highlight the main changes that this €31 million deduction will bring about.

First off, we are told that this figure could have been as high as €100 million, probably to soften the blow!

The bulk of this cut will be borne in the area of third level education. €25 million in cuts made to this area last year and due to be reinstated this year has been continued for another year.

On a more positive note (for teachers at least), The Department of Education has been granted permission to take on 1,250 new teachers. This is to accommodate the greater numbers of students and will not affect the teacher/student ratio.

An additional €5 million is to be invested in a book rental scheme, with the funds coming from the sale of the National Lottery Licence.
